With Plate Tectonics, Palawan lies more central to the Sunda plate than the rest of the Philippines.

The rest of the Philippine Islands lie in the tectonically active area between the Philippine Sea Plate and the Sunda Plate. The islands were formed by Orogeny with the two plates colliding.

Earthquakes in Palawan are said to be very few moderate sized earthquakes (due to not being on a plate boundary).
