Cheetahs are apex preditors and so the ecosystem never could support many of them in the first place. This rareity causes parts of there body to be highly valuable, so diminishing numbers could likely be the cause of poachers in addition to a small inital population.

It is estimated that there were around 100,000 cheetahs worldwide in the early 1900s. However, due to habitat loss and poaching, their population has declined significantly over the years. Today, there are only about 7,000 to 10,000 cheetahs left in the wild.
Cheetahs do not have a home. Many animals do not.
The current population of cheetahs on the continent of African is not known. There are estimates, but the gap is large. The low estimate is 5,000 and the high estimate is 25,000. There are approximately 300 cheetahs remaining in North America.over 101000010000

Cheetahs face a kaleidoscope of threats. Most are very similar to the threats faced by cheetah populations in the rest of Africa as well as in Iran. The human population of Kenya has tripled over the last 45 years to over 42 million, increasing the need for land and space.
