the air space is there for a reason. once the material changes its normal lenght, it probably will need space. this is due to temperature, also know as specific heat capacity The air space causes the window to transfer less heat. Glass is a relatively good medium for conducting heat, while air is a poor conductor. With single paned windows, heat can easily flow from the inside of your house to the outside environment, wasting energy. However, since air is a poor conductor, heat does not transfer as well through thermopane windows.

Is "Thermopane" a trade mark? The generic term is "double glazing", and windows for very cold climates are often tripe-glazed, i.e. with 3 panes.

How do energy efficient windows work?

The energy efficient windows work using multiple layers of glass instead of just one, which was common for the beginning of the 1980s. Since conduction is one of the main reasons for heat loss, with multiple glass layers, this effect is reduced to the minimum.

What are the areas of compression and rarefraction an dwhich type wave do they aply?

LONGITUDINAL wave. Air layers come closer at a particular time at a particular place is known to be compression. At the same place after some time the layers get separated. This is rarefaction. For example, a sound wave.

What is a good way to stop heat escaping from your windows?

A good way to stop heat escaping from your windows is to use weatherstripping to seal any gaps or cracks around the window frames. You can also use window film or thermal curtains to add an extra layer of insulation. Additionally, installing double-pane windows or adding window insulation kits can help reduce heat loss.

Why are you warmer with several layers of clothes than a heavy jacket?

It is known as the layering system. Several thin layers trap more insulating air between the layers. If you start to sweat, you take off a layer or two to cool down, and put the layers back on to warm up again. If you take off a heavy jacket, you will not have the layers underneath to prevent chilling. Usually, a heavy jacket means either being too hot or too cold when active outdoors.

When something is layered it means that one thing is placed over another. is that true?

Yes, although your definition is a little too vague. "I have placed the portrait over the fireplace" is not an example of layering. Layers are surfaces or planes which are laid on top of each other. There are usually more than two such surfaces before we start talking about layers, but there do not need to be. ("a layer of dust lay on the table" is an example of two layers--the dust and the tabletop.) Layers can be quite thick--the layers of the atmosphere for example, but they are always much thinner than they are long and wide.

Why are glass windows possible to be cracked in very cold region?

Thermal shock. If the exterior of the glass is cooled extensively, and the interior subject to much warmer temperatures (especially if it is abrupt, like a hot drink being spilled) the amount of stress built up between the thermal expansion of the inside and outside of the glass can cause it to shatter. Thermopane windows, which include two separate layers of glass, are not nearly as vulnerable to this as older single-panel windows.
