Waterfalls are a great beauty of nature. One can either observe their splendid, symmetrical elegance from a distance or, in many cases, can actually submerge himself underneath or near the falls.
One reason they are special is that they are associated with lovers and newly-weds. For years, Niagra Falls was a very popular locale that attracted honeymooners and other young marrieds.
Some people were brave, or fearless enough, to go over Niagra Falls in a barrel; the barrel always burst when it hit the water below, and the sportsman had to swim to one of the sides.
They are also special because they are not that plentiful, and so their siren calls are for those who've checked their maps and know where to go.
Anyone who takes photographs home of themselves under or near a waterfall has souvenirs to enjoy for a lifetime.
