Only some whales and seals have become so reduced in population as to be classified as endangered. Most species were hunted commercially for products such as oil in the case of whales, and fur in the case of seals. Some countries commercially hunt these animals today. Overfishing of these animals' food stocks and water pollution pose additional threats.
