The letter I is capitalized in a sentence when it is used as a word to refer to the person writing. Proper (personal) names of people, places, and things are capitalized in English grammar. The word "I" is a personal pronoun; its function is to take the place of the name of the person doing the writing. Thus, the capitalization.

I have replaced the original answer, mostly by simply correcting the grammar and spelling and rephrasing it a bit. So I have changed the content, but not the meaning of the original answer.

If anyone out there can tell me why the word "I" is capitalized for the reason stated, but the word "you" is not, I will have found the answer to the question I orignally sought :-)

My suggestion (jparrot99):

Go to:

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=I&searchmode=none

There it says simply "to mark it as a distinct word and avoid misreading in handwritten manuscripts. "

Because you are talking about yourself e.g I like motorcross

English speakers were egotistic and wanted the first person pronoun (I) to look more important than the rest (he, she, they, we, etc.) </sarcasm> Actually... back in the day, printers would have difficulty typing the letter "i", as it would often get lost or attached to another word. So, to make the letter stand out more as a separate word, the letter was capitalized.

The first letter is capitalized to help distinguish between the elements when writing the formula for a compound.

For example: carbon = C, oxygen = O, and cobalt = Co. If we did not use the capital letters we would be unable to distiguish from CO (the formula for the compound carbon monoxide) and Co (plain old cobalt). They would both be written as "co".

In English, words are capitalized only when they are "proper" nouns, or if they begin a sentence.

A proper noun is the name of a person or place, or a title of something. Examples:

Barack Obama (person's name)

President Obama (person's title)

Washington (place name)

All The President's Men (movie title)

A bit tricky: some nouns are capitalized when used as a title, and otherwise not, for example:

Yesterday, my father told me to be quiet. (father is a relationship, not a title).

Yesterday, Father said to be quiet. (Now it's used as his name or title, so it's capitalized.)

Not all languages have the same rules about capitalization, so be sure to check when changing languages.

The I, which is a pronoun, should always be written in a capital letter simply because the formal English grammar requires it.

ID is an abbreviation for the word "identification."

If you are referring to psychology, though, the id is not capitalized.

It is a grammatical rule that is always followed. It's used to aid speech of sentences as it indicates that a breath/pause should be taken before beginning again.
