That is because the message board system is based on an old design and it can't handle two people posting messages at the same time. In the future we will reprogram the message board code and then this won't be a problem any longer.
Leave a message on their board saying you want to chat.

no you just click the message link if its not their type in after their url /message or /ask and click the anonymous option, if its not there then they have not turned on the anonymous option therefore you can not message them on anonymous
If you mean the email address of other WikiAnswers contributors, then you have to ask them on their message board. Just keep in mind that the message boards are not private; anyone can read them.
You cant unless they put a message on your message board or send you a gift. Thats the only way of knowing if someones online.
In answer to your message
If you know their name, then open =your own= message board and type their name instead of yours in the URL box (the very top of the page). If you are on their profile page, then look at the top right area and click "Message this user". That will take you to their message board.
