The better question is, why do Muslims not celebrate Christmas? This is because Christmas is a specifically Christian religious holiday - the original name of the celebration was Christ's Mass and then shortened over time to Christmas. In Christian religious beliefs, December 25 is the day that Jesus was born in Bethlehem to Mary and Joseph.

Muslims believe that Jesus was a major prophet of Allah, but that he was completely mortal and not the Son of God as Christians believe. Basically, it makes no sense for Muslims to celebrate the birth of the Son of God because they don't believe Jesus was the Son of Allah.

For a Muslim to celebrate Christmas, or at least the religious aspects of Christmas, would be for the Muslim to in effect be turning his/her back on the teaching of the prophet Muhammed (pbuh).

Because Christmas is a Christain holiday. If your a Muslim, you religion is Islam, therefore you do not celebrate Christmas. You need to know the history of Christmas before asking this question so you can ask yourself, "Would this be allowed in Islam" Muslims do not share all the same beliefs as Christains, they do believe in Jesus,(Isa), but as a prophet of Allah, not the son. Muslims believe that Allah has no father or son.

Generally, Muslims do not celebrate non Muslim festivals for many reasons:

  • First, if non Muslims don't celebrate Muslim festivals, why do you expect Muslims to celebrate non Muslim festivals.
  • Second, per Islam religion, Muslims are not required to celebrate their own prophet Muhammad birthday (some Muslims celebrate His birthday jut as tradition and good practice but not per religion commands). So, do you expect the birthday of any other prophet (Moses or Jesus or any other prophet) to be celebrated by Muslims.
  • Third, Muslim festivals are related to big Islamic events and actions (as fasting or pilgrimage) and not related to persons whoever. So, it is logic for Muslims not to celebrate festivals for persons of other religions as well as Islamic religions.
  • Fourth, some non Muslim festivals are against montheism and/or against Islam fundamentals and basic principles. So, it is logic not to be celebrated by Muslims.

However, despite the above, in some Muslim countries, like Egypt, Muslims share Christians in celebrating the new year and the Easter day. In addition, in Egypt they have the Christmas Day as a national holiday to express their sharing with Christians this celebration.

Finally, could you give just one example of any non Muslim country (Eastern or Western) celebrates or shares celebration of any Muslim festival.

Muslims do not believe that Jesus was the Savior. Why would they celebrate or condone the commemoration of an individual with no significance to them?
