because it would be too much for your congitive brain to control. imagine every second for your body to work you have to think.. ok heart contract ... now rest...contract... and at the same time think lungs pull in air.... release... and consciously tell your body digest this food...

this is only a small margin of things you would have to think about if all your muscles were voluntary and you would have to do it every second you wish to live.

You would have to conciously think about everything your body needs to do to live. Like making your diaphragm contract and relax so you could breathe, or making your heart beat so that your blood could flow. Good luck sleeping, you'd die quickly since you wouldn't be concious to make yourself breathe, etc.

Because if your you had to actually control all of the muscles that control heart rate, breathing, your lymphatic system, swallowing, digestion, etc... You would be constantly focused on taking care of these routine bodily functions and incapable of doing much else. Imagine it as a very complex multi-tasking job... and then add in all of the work you normally have to do in a day. You would constantly have to be focused. If you start to day dream and forget to tell your heart to pump blood then the results would be pretty dramatic. Also, sleep would be pretty difficult if you had to consciously tell your body to keep working. Any trauma resulting in a loss of consciousness or focus would essentially be fatal. Really think about it and you realize that if your system didn't automate these processes then humanity would be a very short lived species.
