The School of Shammai states that the Shema should be recited lying down as the passage indicates. The School of Hillel states that one may say it in whatever position is comfortable. Shammai has a stricter approach on all halachic issues and is therefore followed less so. Consequently, Hillel's view regarding this issue and others is followed though many commentators note that Shammai's position(s) will be followed during the Messanic Age because stricter observance will be easier.
