For instance it may be used on farms. Farmers often sell the sperm of valuable horses or bull's because they have favorable genetic material. For instance a very powerful bull will often be used to breed new cattle.

On the other hand artificial insemination may also be used to keep species alive or to have animals mate that usually are rather picky. This includes the panda. They are known to mate rarely and instead of having them go extinct, they are artificially inseminated to keep them alive. This is also used for other animals that are usually not kept in pairs in zoos or other locations, such as orcas.
