Well if you read the whole story in The Bible it becomes a lot more clear. Now i don't know the scientific answer to this question but i do know that there were 3 wise man (shepards) they were kinda like scientist back in Jesus' day. Now they somehow knew that Jesus (the coming messiah) was being born, So they followed this star to wear baby Jesus was. They brought him gifts.....Gold, Frankincense, and Mur! so yeah that's why there were three shepards by Jesus when he was born. Hope this helps but for all the scientific stuff your gunna have to Google it or I would encourage you to watch the movie "The Nativity Story" Its a great representation to how it was! :)
'Shepherds' is the subject while 'Jesus' is the direct object.

You can say the signs were the star , shepherds and wisemen and Joseph and Mary.

The three shepherds who visited Jesus were known as the Magi. They were a group of wise men from the East who had followed a star to Bethlehem. They were believed to be Persian astrologers and were known by the names of Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. These three men followed the star and brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Jesus. They were the first to recognize Jesus as the King of the Jews and paid homage to Him.
