Prior to 1958, the government of Chinese used the Wade-Giles system to translate Chinese characters and symbols into the Roman alphabet. However, after 1958 the Chinese government switched to the pinyin system of translation, so the name Peking (Wade-Giles system) was translated to Beijing (Pinyin System).
