Beijing, a capital city of China, was initially referred as Peking (meaning Northern Capital) so as to distinguish it from Nanjing (Southern Capital). Prior to 1958, the government of Chinese used the Wade-Giles system to translate Chinese characters and symbols into the Roman alphabet. However, after 1958 the Chinese government switched to the pinyin system of translation, so the name Peking (Wade-Giles system) was translated to Beijing (Pinyin System).
