It can be connected to Wi-Fi. It can't be connected for you that's because you have no wi-fi signal for your ds. Getting Wi-fi for your ds is much so complicated.

You have to go through quite a bit to set up WiFi. If you have a router in your house, which you should (I assume you have a PC, or a Laptop) then you're pretty much set. Go to Copper and Booker and ask for a Friend Code -- they will tell you that you need to set up an access point, or WiFi connection. Go through the steps that they tell you, and double check your connection. Then try asking for a Friend Code again.
If you need additional help, search Nintendo Wi-Fi Troubleshooting online. There's a Nintendo site that will help you with setting up a WiFi connection.
