The inability to see the optical disk in Windows XP can be caused by a lose cable or drivers not being in stalled properly. Check to make sure the cables are properly connected and make su4re the drivers are installed correctly.
You can't erase data from a DVD, so there's no option to do so.

you probably lost your drivers for your internet adapter. go to your device manger and check to see if there's a problem and if so reinstall driver's from install disk- if you don't have the install disk then truy using a windows xp OS install disk and ask windows to update driver's for network adapter.

It is checking to see if a bootable disk (i.e. windows startup disk) is inserted. Obviously, if it didn't check + your computer didn't work then you wouldn't be able to use your startup disk.
