Because a period in a web address other that www. and .com, like www.my.website.com refers to a subdomain. You still need a registered domain before you can create a sub domain. If you really want a period in the web address, then register the second part as the domain (in this case, website.com) then create a subdomain (my) so that you can use the web address my.website.com.
