The spill originates 13,000 ft below the sea floor. A blow out has an incredible force coming out of the well bore. Sitting a small sub on top of a 40 ft high blow out preventer would buckle the well, destroy the cement seal in place, and fracture the formation. Oil would be coming out all over the ocean floor. Similar results could be acheived by using bombs as some have suggested.
The oil spill is huge, but there are a number of ideas out there which could make the spill 100 times worse.
to much
Yes, oil can spill in a river again if they don't watch carefully or doesn't fix a problem with it.
There trying to clean up the spill and trying to fix it at the same time and a way to stop it is to rec-cycle to help the government out.
Drilling in the gulf was halted to prevent more oil spills. It was believed that current security systems and/or regulations were not working, and that the temporary delay it would take to fix the system would give the system time to fix itself while it handled a major oil spill. Oil spill handling systems were already taxed due to having to handle the BP oil spill, and it was believed that the handling of another spill at the same time would be very poor and cause much damage.
That is a freakin huge oil spill. I hear they're thinking of trying to burn it. The best way to get rid of it is burning it. Trust me, I did a report on oil spills for my school.
No the world won't end because the oil is only going to be from the Gulf all the way up to the border of New Jersey in about a year. I agree but what about hurricanes it might stir it up or something.
I hope they do. The human race could die of this.===================================Will Who fix What oil spill? Please ask questions that are more specific.
Because billions of barrels of oil was spilled into the gulf ruining reefs, killing animals, and the amount of oil in the gulf is increasing dramaticly every day. And the worst part is... BP's plans to fix it fail, over and over again, and their plans will continue to fail.
Around 15,000,000,000
Yes, they did. Today. July 15th
It is true that the only "sure" way to end it is for BP to drill a relief well. This will take months, and the spill will most likely keep on leaking through September. However, this idea may not even work either! However, during this time BP will most likely find ways to capture more and more oil. Possibly, they may be able to find a more quick fix for the spill. Yet, the effect of the spill will last for decades. The cleanup, the compensation for people who lost their jobs due to the spill, and the damage to marine life will last for many years after the spill is stopped. The spill has already released more than six times more oil into the gulf than the previous large oil spill in Alaska. If this spill cannot be stopped, you could say that the gulf will be lost forever and the South will suffer forever, and BP will become the most hated name in all of the world.
I will assume that you want to know how to fix the current oil spill. The oil must be stopped from flowing out into the gulf. The oil is flowing from an underground reservoir up a wellbore and then out into the gulf. You can slow the progress by using dispersants, containment booms and selective burns. But the real fix will be done when oil is prevented from flowing. I would suggest you listen to the May 10, 2010 conference on BP's efforts to shut-in the well. The two methods that are being done to stop the well from flowing are: (1) the top kill, using a junk shot followed by kill mud, and the relief well drilling. The relief well will require drilling a well very close to the Maconda well.
