The Philippine Independent Church was inspired by Bishop Gregorio Aglipay (1860-1940) who himself was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church, became a Freemason, and married. The church was formed in 1902, partly in response to the history of mistreatment of native Filipinos by Spanish colonial priests. The church does not require clerical celibacy and rejects the primacy of the Church of Rome.
