The most likely reason is that your laptop does not meet the system requirements for Windows XP.
It does - at least it does on my Toshiba laptop. I have an old laptop drive that I now use as an external back-up drive. Windows 7 recognises it as soon as I plug it into a USB port.
you put in a windows xp CD and install it as you would any other operating system. For an old low powered laptop, the toshiba 4300 handles xp very well. Providing the minimum specifications are met by the laptop, I.E you have an adequate amount of memory and hard drive space, you'll find that this very basic and poorly built machine will hold it's own against later notebooks.

The only way to find out is to test it. If you find the game is crashing regularly, it means your laptop does not meet the system requirements and will not support the game. Personally, my 6-year-old Toshiba laptop can't handle the game but yours might depending on how old it is.

Refurbishing a window 7 laptop should take long and should be easy. All you would have to do is go into the settings and have everything restored to the old settings.
I recommend a Dell laptop. I would say either a vostro or a inspiron. I would recommend inspiron though not too expensive, speedy, looks good, and has good speifications and is also a home laptop. You can also get it with Windows 7 on it too.
