No, it is not against the law. It is more about etiquette and rules. Any group, organization, or community has the right to create rules for it's "members". As a student, you belong to a community of learners, under the charge of adults. Just like dress codes, or start times, schools have the right to impose rules on their students.

Some reasons that gum chewing is frowned upon include:

  • one person chewing can make others want gum--which causes distractions
  • some people chew noisily or with their mouths open, smacking gum, blowing bubbles, etc.
  • seeing a roomful of kids chomping on gum is unattractive and annoying, like watching livestock chewing their cuds
  • it is bad for the teeth
  • some people dispose of gum in improper places, under desks, on seats, on the floor
  • gum can transmit germs through saliva - strangers shouldn't have to be exposed to other people's germs
  • if picked up on someone else's shoes, it tracks germs through the school and the victim has to deal with someone else's created problem
  • gum can get stuck in people's hair, accidentally or on purpose
  • forbidding gum altogether stops numerous problems

no, you can try, what you do is pop in a peice of gum before class and remember chew your gum very quietly with your mouth closed, and when your gum goes tastless you can ask your teacher if you can go to the bathroom and then you can 1. put the gum down the toilet or 2. you can wrap it up and throw it away in the wastbasket. i don't think you'll get in trouble.
