Because it is more reactive then carbon to be extracted in a blast furnace. Remember carbon is the reducing agent and for it to work the metal being extracted has to be lower in the reactivity series, e.g. iron

Aluminum oxidizes more easily than the carbon used to remove oxygen from ore in a blast furnace, therefore the aluminum would reduce the carbon dioxide to elemental carbon and leave aluminum oxide behind instead of aluminum metal.

How is aluminium extracted?

Aluminum is extracted from bauxite, the ore in which aluminum oxide is found, through a refining process known as the Bayer process. The bauxite is mixed sodium hydroxide and heated, which separates the aluminum oxide because it dissolves in the sodium hydroxide while the rest of the bauxite does not.

Why is electrolysis much more expensive than using a blast furnace?

electrolysis requires a lot of electrical energy, however this is not the same with reduction with carbon (blast furnace), which is a lot cheaper than electrolysis, but not always the most practical. :)

Why does titanium more than steel?

i am doing homework and this is what i put: steel is extacted using a blast furnace which is quick and relatively cheap. however to extract titanium, magnesium is needed because it is more reactive. magnesium is extracted by electrolysis, which is expensive therefore it is not cheap to buy. you have to buy the magnesium to extract the titanium, which is why titanium is expensive hope this helped and you can copy it word for word i dont care :)

Why are aluminium and titanium expensive to extract?

They are reactive metals, and so need to be extracted from their ores using electricity, whereas less reactive metals like iron can be extracted by smelting - roasting with carbon - which is a lot cheaper to do. Both metals are useful because they both do not corrode, as they both have an oxide layer to protect them from corrosion. They both need to be extracted by a process called "electrolysis" which means to break up substances using electricity. Electrolysis uses a lot of energy (ie- very high temperatures) and a great deal of electricity. Therefore we need to recycle aluminium to conserve energy, as recycling aluminium does not require electrolysis.
