If a pregnant woman is advised not to take a certain over the counter or prescription medication it is likely because there are no studies done showing what effects if any the drug will have on a fetus.

The medication gets into the bloodstream and gets in to the umbilical cord and goes to the fetus. The fetus can be damaged by the medication. Avoid smoking, alcohol, medications of any kind unless your doctor gives you permission to take it, that includes over the counter medications. Eat right, take the prenatal vitamins and take good care of yourself.
