It's human nature to group like things together. Its a shorthand, if we didn't have it jokes wouldn't work. Though it obviously has a negative side. But we have come along a long way from racial stereotypes, as a child gollywog dolls were common and I saw on harm in them, but when I viewed the Victorian Sambo books that had made them popular I could understand why they were offensive in extreme.
