My guesses are that

1. The shifter is not in park.

2. The transmission is not in park. (Other end of shifter cable.)

3. There is a safety deal on your key, grabs ahold if it for things like not being in park. This could have gone bad.

-Idea, (On a late 1996 jimmy/1997)

On the bottom of your steering column is a half inch round plastic tab you can remove. You can then put a screw driver up in the hole to manually push the 'key locker' open.
