Best Answer

A capacitor will oppose the flow of a.c. due to its capacitive reactance (Xc), expressed in ohms.

The capacitive reactance for a given capacitor is inversely-proportional to the frequency of the supply; in other words, the higher the frequency, to lower the capacitive reactance.

What devices can be used to block DC and pass AC?

simple capacitor can do this job (to block dc and pass ac).

Can capacitor store charge from ac source?

Yes. A capacitor stores charge from any source, including AC.The difference between DC and AC, however, is that the capacitor will be constantly changing in charge, in step with the AC. Due to the nature of the capacitor, the current through the capacitor will lead the voltage by some amount, depending on capacitance and resistance. {In the ideal case of a perfect capacitor, conductors, and AC power source, the current will lead the voltage by 90 degrees phase angle.}This is called capacitive reactance.Another way for a capacitor to store charge from an AC source, of course, is to place a rectifier diode in front of the capacitor. This, then, becomes an AC to DC converter.

Characteristics of a capacitor?

Block DC components and pass AC component

How does capacitor discharge while ac supply is on?

For part of the AC voltage wave, the capacitor will be above the source voltage, and will discharge until the AC voltage wave increases above the capacitor's stored voltage.

What is the function of mylar capacitor?

In electronic circuits a capacitor is used to pass AC and block DC.

What is the use of diodes in doubler voltage?

A: The purpose it to block the capacitor from discharging to the source

Why capacitor used in a DC inverter?

capacitor is component used to store and release the electric charge.and also it has feature to block the dc but bypass ac.and inverter is device which converts ac to dc and then again ac

What happens when a capacitor is connected to a dc supply?

is it ? are you sure ? but i know so many circuit where capacitor is connected with ac supply . still , if u connected a capacitor to dc supply , then : 1. if it is in SERIES with the dc supply , it will block all the dc current as capacitor provides infinite resistance to dc current . application : where u want to block dc current.(simple high pass filter) 2. if it is in PARALLEL with the dc supply , it will not block dc current , but if any ac current comes out from the supply , the ac current will go through the capacitor , as capacitor provides small resistance to ac current. application : a) where u want to block ac current.(simple low pass filter) b) to filter the noise (ac components) of dc supply.

Can a capacitor be used in the Thevenin Theorem?

Sure, but it won't mean anything unless the Thevenin source is an AC source. In that case, simply determine the frequency of the source, and draw the appropriate reactance in the circuit where the capacitor belongs. If the Thevenin source is DC, then the frequency is zero, the reactance of the capacitor is infinite, and you can show it as an open circuit, i.e. not there.

Why coupling capacitor is used inelectronics circuits?

To Block DC voltages and couple AC signals through to the next circuit.

What is the purpose of a blocking capacitor?

At high frequency, capacitor can be considered as 1. Short Circuit in AC analysis. 2. Open Circuit in DC analysis. {because Xc= 1/(2*f*pi) where f= supply frequency,pi=3.14} As at high frequencies, in DC analysis, capacitor will be open circuited & can block the DC signal while AC signal is allowed to pass through.. Hence, this capacitor will act as a blocking capacitor for DC supply.

Why capacitor in transistor amplifier circuit at input?

Because capacitor not allow to pass dc voltage, but capacitor allow ac voltage and signal.Purpose is to block dc voltage. That is coupling condenser.
