Most kittens will do this as practice. They enjoyed trying to catch "prey" on their own. But it is basically like playing with your food, you mess with it but never really eat it. These young cats take pleasure in the pride of catching moving targets. Sometimes though they also bring it for you as a sign of gratitude. Later on as they grow up they will probably start to eat their prey.

A cat will eat mice, especially those that have been raised and taught by their mother or by their own trials and errors that mice actually taste good. But a house cat may not eat mice because either she is probably full from the canned food or the cat kibble that is set out for her to eat, or she's just killing for the fun of it. Or she may also be so used to getting service from her humans that she can't quite figure out that a freshly killed mouse is supposed to be her dinner.
