Among the challenges of the 21st Century the foremost is the issue of environmental protection. The greenhouse factor is one of the pressing issues which have led to global warming and climatic changes throughout the world. The biggest factor contributing to this increase in climate change is pollution caused by carbon based fuel consuming automobiles. These fuels are believed to emit unhealthy levels of carbon into the atmosphere which trap ultraviolet radiation from escaping the atmosphere of the earth thus causing a rapid increase in the temperature of the Earth. One way of reducing this increase is by investing in alternative fuels like compressed natural gas (CNG).

CNG, short for compressed natural gas, has become a very popular alternative to conventional automotive fuels like gasoline and petroleum. Because it is based primarily on methane, it can be combusted without releasing too much carbon into the atmosphere. This makes CNG a much more environmentally friendly fuel alternative to petroleum and gasoline. It has found its way in several countries and major cities of the world and has helped to reduce pollution levels in those countries. In addition to being less polluting, CNG is also much safer for environment and human health compared with other carbon-based fuels.

CNG has to compete against crude oil based fuels and electric power based power generating systems. The most important criteria here is carbon emissions in which CNG cars take the lead because they produce the least carbon emissions into the atmosphere compared with gasoline and electricity powered cars. In one study it has been estimated that CNG vehicles produce around 20% less carbon monoxide than gasoline powered vehicles and 25% fewer greenhouse gases. The electric cars are coal powered and so they also lead to the release of a substantial number of carbon pollutants into the atmosphere.

CNG is also safer as compared to other fuels, although some special precautions need to be taken here. One of the best things about CNG is that despite being a fuel, it has a very narrow flammable range. This means that it is much safer than gasoline which can catch fire much more easily than CNG. CNG stations are also much safer than petrol stations. Another useful property of CNG is that it is a gas as compared to gasoline; in fact, it's lighter than air. So in case there is a gas leak the gas will diffuse rapidly into the atmosphere leaving less room for a discharge or an explosion to take place.

These factors make CNG not only environmentally friendly as compared to traditional fuels but also safer for human and environmental health. It is a useful alternative fuel because it has also created employment for a lot of people in the CNG industry and has reduced the problems faced by countries because of the high oil import bills. The network of CNG stations around the world is increasing rapidly which is testament to the widely growing popularity of CNG as an environmentally friendly fuel alternative.

Why use CNG as a fuel rather than diesel and petrol what is CNG?

CNG or Compressed Natural Gas is considered ecologically cleaner and safer than diesel or petrol. Consisting mainly of methane, CNG is much more beneficial to valves and injectors of combustion engines . It is much used as a fuel in mining vehicles in places like gypsum mines.

Why is CNG the preferred fuel?

CNG is the preferred fuel because it is cheap for the normal man and it is eco-friendly to nature etc.

Why cng is more preferred over diesel?

It may be due to the pollution level ie.,the poisonous substance emitted from diesel is more compared to CNG. The cost of CNG is less when compared to diesel.

Why is cng preferable for vehicles than petrol and diesel?

Burns cleaner.

Why cng is called clean fuel?

Compressed Natural Gas is a cleaner fuel because it produce less or neglible amount of residue and smoke. Nowadays, petrol and diesel is being replacedby CNG in transport fuel as it cause less harm to the environment

What are the advantage of CNG over petrol and diesel engine?

CNG engines create less polution than petrol and diesel engines. As it is using compress natural gas power develops more than the others and also develops more torque in the engine.which leads to give a lower fuel consumption.

What is burnt in the engine to release energy for the car to move?

A mixture of fuel (such as petrol/unleaded gasoline, diesel, LPG or CNG, E85, etc.) and air.
