Most trees are not tolerant of salty soil and are less likely to grow near the edge of the coast. Coconut trees need lots of sunlight and the canopy (shade) of other trees prevents this. They require moderate temperatures and typically the sea prevents coasts from getting too cold. Finally, they like lots of rainfall which common near the coast.
I think they are found in the Caribbean because most areas in the Caribbean are wet and sandy like beaches and just small garden areas.
