The quantity of gas that is dissolved in the liquid is highly dependent of the temperature. Since there is usually air above water, oxygen from the air is dissolving in the water (and other gases, too) and oxygen from the water is "evaporating" to the air, so they form an equilibrium that is primarily dependent of the temperature of water, especially at the surface the water is normally saturated with oxygen (unless is is very polluted and all the oxygen gets used for degrading waste, but this is another story). You can see a graph that represents how much oxygen can be dissolved in the water at the link below (any many other sites).

Does cold water or hot water hold more oxygen?

Cold water can hold more dissolved oxygen than hot water. This is because the solubility of oxygen in water decreases as the temperature increases. Therefore, cold water has the ability to hold more oxygen than hot water.

Does cold water or warm water hold more oxygen?

Cold water holds more oxygen than warm water. As temperature decreases, the solubility of gases, including oxygen, increases, allowing cold water to retain more oxygen molecules. This is why aquatic life often thrives in colder environments, where oxygen levels are higher. Conversely, warmer water tends to have lower oxygen levels, which can impact marine ecosystems.

Can cold or hot water hold more oxygen?

Cold water can hold more oxygen than hot water. This is because gases are more soluble in colder temperatures than in warmer temperatures. As the temperature of water increases, its ability to hold dissolved gases, including oxygen, decreases.

Why aquatic species feel comfortable in cold water rather than warm water?

Fish survive better in cold water then in warm water because :- 1) Cold water has more oxygen and more oxygen means more microscopic life which means more food. 2) In Cold water there is more solubility of the carbon dioxide released by the fish

Are plants more abundant in cold water or hot water?

Plants are generally more abundant in cold water, as cooler temperatures typically provide more dissolved oxygen and nutrients that are essential for plant growth. In hot water, the lower oxygen levels and increased temperatures can restrict plant growth and lead to ecosystem stress.

Why does cold water affect goldfish respiration?

Cold water affects goldfish respiration because it lowers their metabolic rate, leading to decreased oxygen consumption. This reduction in metabolic activity slows down their respiration rate as they require less oxygen to sustain their body functions in cold water. Additionally, cold water can hold more dissolved oxygen, making it easier for goldfish to extract oxygen from the water, further contributing to their decreased respiration rate.

How does the temperature of water affect the amount of oxygen dissolved in it?

The temperature of water affects the amount of oxygen dissolved in it. Generally, colder water can hold more oxygen compared to warmer water. This is because cold water molecules are closer together, allowing more oxygen molecules to dissolve in the water. Conversely, warmer water molecules are farther apart, making it harder for oxygen to dissolve.

Which fruit freezes the best out of strawberry banana and apple?

The strawberry will freeze the best because it has more oxygen it a has water that will get cold and freeze. This is why it is the answer. Scientists have studied this and they predict that the seeds and water that are in the strawberry give of more oxygen that they freeze up when it gets somewhere cold.

How much air is in hot water Is there more air in cold water under the same pressure of course?

Colder water can hold more oxygen than warmer water.

Is there less oxygen in Antarctica?

No, possibly there's more. Scientifically, extreme cold water holds more dissolved oxygen than warm water. As well, fresh water holds more oxygen than sea water. Ninety-eight percent of the Antarctic is covered with an ice sheet containing about 70% of the earth's fresh water.

Which one of the following regions would you expect to find the largest amounts of dissolved oxygen in the ocean water?

In the polar regions, there is more dissolved oxygen in the ocean water. The cold water is able to hold more dissolved gases than warm water.

More oxygen will in colder water than in warmer water?

Yes, colder water can hold more dissolved oxygen than warmer water. This is because colder water molecules are more compact and can hold gases more effectively than warmer water. This is important for aquatic ecosystems as many aquatic organisms rely on dissolved oxygen for respiration.
