When you apply for a job, you potential bosses are going to be looking at key "signals" from you. What your job experience is, where have you worked, how long have you worked, etc. Simple things, like dressing nicely for an interview are called "low signals" because they are easy to do and everybody can do them. Now, a college degree, weither it be a bachelor, master, doctorate or Phd sends a "high signal" to your bosses, telling them you have invested significant time and effort to learning in the field your degree is in. Your bosses are going to high the man with the degree over a person with equivalent expierence time and time again. Conclusion is that a college education opens doors that would be shut to you in the labor market because it sends out a "high signal" that otherwise you could not send.
