It could be the way you're charging. If you're charging it by computer and it doesn't work than, I do not know why. Sorry. If you're charging by speaker, it could be the kind of speaker, it might take a while, it might be that the speaker does not charge the ipod.

There are probably many reasons but a start would be to remove the speakers and check them for connections. If the vehicle is older there could be errosion depending on the speaker placement and the type of vehicle. You could also look at the connections at the rear of the head unit or a possible break in the speaker wire going to the speakers. most speaker wires work conventionally so yes it would work but if you go to your local speaker shop you can pick up some good quality speaker wire try it out see what you think
You could plug in a bigger speaker into it and then turn the volume up on the speaker
