Under the Caste System there was a tremendous focus on preserving a social image of the family as a whole, and bettering one's reputation. Due to a fragile sense of shame, marrying under your caste was severely looked down upon, and because no one wants to live like a social exile, from family, neighbors, society, etc. it was essentially forbidden.
