Port Royal, Jamaica.
Port Royal, once the largest city in the Caribbean, was built in 1518 on a sandy isthmus called the Palisadoes at the mouth of Kingston Harbor in Jamaica. It had become the home base of many pirates before being totally destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami in 1692.
A tsunami followed the earthquake of 1692, and the shoreward half of the city (built on loose sand) subsided into the sea. Although as many as 3000 people died from the earthquake, nearly as many died from disease in the aftermath of the disaster.
