Like many in history, it is a contentious subject. There are two ways you can view his methods.

The first is that he released the slaves purely because he cared, he believed the keeping of slaves was unethical, and he definitely didn't keep any himself (there is as much evidence for he didn't keep them for as much as there is that he did keep them)

But most people don't believe that.

The other, recently more popularly accepted view, is that it was a purely political move, that by releasing the slaves he could procure the extra votes he needed to win the next election. Historians argue that the evidence leans onto this one.

You can look at more facts before you decide, but thats the basics.
