Why did Al Pacino remain inactive for four years after doing Revolution in 1985 and coming back for Sea of Love 1989?

One of my favorite Actors. Besides the Godfather, I think he did his best work in Dog Day Afternoon, and my favorite "Scent of a Woman." Filming "Revolution" in 1985 was the toughest shoot in Pacino's long list of credits; horrible weather conditions and numerous financial difficulties challenged the production, and Pacino was also diagnosed with a serious bout of pneumonia. He was also in a depressed state of mind, since his relationship with Marthe Keller had come to an end. It didn't help matters when the film was released: It was labelled one of the worst movies to come out of the 1980's and declared an embarassment for all who were involved with it. Though he was still getting numerous offers from studios, Pacino fell into depression from the bad reviews of his previous film and went on a 4 year hiatus from movies. He starred in a few plays, but generally stayed out of the limelight. He had brief flings with actresses Carol Kane (his co-star from "Dog Day Afternoon" (she played the teller in the bank) and actor Kathleen Quinlan. He later came back and made several other films nothing short of the huge productions that the Godfather trilogy and Scarface brought on later becoming cult classics for generations that grew up in the 70s and 80s, but he had a long term relationship with actress Beverly D'Angelo(Ellen Griswoldt from the National Lampoon Vacation movies) who he has twin children by which ended pretty nasty a few years ago. Cuz he felt like it.Duh.
