Various reasons drew the United States into WWII. The attack on Pearl Harbor started the war in the Pacific against Japan. As for the European Theater, The sinking of the RMS Lusitania by a German U-Boat (attack on a civilian vessel which had Americans on board) and the discovery of the Zimmerman note (Germans asked tried to turn Mexico against the US) finally provided the reason to join the war.
President Woodrow Wilson feared that the war would turn Americans against each other, because most Americans were born in other countries, including countries in Europe. Many of these foreign-born Americans supported the country they originally were born at which caused many conflicts against many Americans whose countries were enemies.
