Most garments were made of linen fibres from the flax plant. This makes a pale-coloured cloth that is bleached by the hot sun to become almost white in its natural state. Washing was frequent, using natron and a soap of ashes, clay, and bonding ingredient - these would also serve to bleach the fabric.

Nobles, especially noblewomen, could afford much more expensive garments, some almost transparent, occasionally with nets of red, blue or green faience beads across the middle third of their dresses.

There is some evidence for dresses dyed pale blue, pink and green but these would appear to be exceptions rather than the rule. White clothes seem to have expressed simplicity, purity and conformity (things the Egyptians held as sacred, embodied by the idea of MAat: righteousness, truth, doing the right thing).

Clothing was generally made of linen from the flax plant, which is almost white in its natural state; frequent washing and being worn outside in the hot sun it soon bleached to pure white.

Dyes were known, but only the most wealthy people could afford to wear dyed linen.
