He was living in NC and Tennessee, not yet a state was part of NC territory. Being a young lawyer, he accepted the position of public prosecutor for the Nashville district, so he had a job there. I suspect that he also was lured by the prospect of cheap land and opportunity to be in the start of something new and exciting.
