Frank didn't write a diary for the war. She was given it by her father, Otto, to record whatever she wanted. At that time, she was in hiding, so she wouldn't have seen what was going on outside.

As to why she wanted one, it is unknown. However she was overjoyed when she got it.

Anne slapped the diary closed when Mrs Van Daan walked in because her diary was private and she didn't want anyone to read it and according to Otto Frank (her father who survived a concentration camp and died in 1980) she always asked to be left by herself when she was writing. Also, she used to write some descriptions about Mrs Van Daan. I hope this information helps.
