people where scared
Before the creation of the U.S. Constitution, the only model of government these individuals were familiar with were oligarchies and aristocracies, rule by one or rule by a few. Therefore they did not want to provide the executive branch, whether it be unitary or plural, with so much power as to resemble that form of rule which they were trying to escape from.

Simple answer: the fear of big government. One view that the Antifederalists had was that the majority of power should be held by the states, not the central government. They played on the fear of a repeat of Britain: power in the hands of a few.
The antifederalists at the time of the ratification of the US Constitution believed the document invested too much power in the central government. They believed that the majority of the power should lie with the individual states.
The fear of a central government was based on the previous government of America, which was an oppressive monarchy. Americans were afraid that a strong central government would be just like being ruled by a king all over again.
Many were very sensitive to the development of a strong central government because of how they were mistreated by the British government before the Revolutionary War. The anti-Federalists wanted to prevent the formation of a federal government in order to retain their political and religious liberty. This resulted in a compromise, otherwise known as the Bill of Rights. :D
