Arthas became so obsessed with revenge against the Scourge that he traded his men's lives to get to the legendary sword, Frostmourne. When he took possession of the sword, Kel Thu'zad (the lich king) took posession of him. Arthas returned to the Alliance lands (by way of Silvermoon city) and murdered his father and Uther Lightbringer. He then returned to the North (long story) and smashed the frozen throne, thus permanently joining himself and Kel'Thuzad.

The Lich King is the commander of all the Scourge forces, and it is his will that keeps them under control. Without a Lich King to guide them, they would rampage chaotically around Azeroth, killing as they go and creating new undead. Azeroth would become a dead world, and even Arthas understood he'd need new living beings to continue his Scourge army.
Nerzhul once was a skilled shaman teaching his orcish people the ways of nature. he and most of his clan were befouled by the unholy arts of the Burning legion leader Sargaras and was proposed a deal. For the loyalty of himself and his clan to the burning legion, he would gain the powers over the dead. That's when the scourge was created. after the scourges first failure nerzhul was trapped in an ice veil. his soul and power trapped within his armour and powerful runesword. sargaras left them all on the isle of northrend. sargaras once again used the scourge to attempt to create dimensional portals using the nightelves source of power, the tree of life, and bring the burning legion to azeroth. during sargaras's campaign, Prince Arthas menethil went to northrend to avenge his people. unwittingly he found and wielded nerzhul's runeblade, eventually driving arthas to insanity. Prince Arthas empowered by the lichking(nerzhul) laid waste to his homelands slaughtering his own father. he turned himself to king of his blazing homeland after the defeat (once again) of the burning legion. Arthas then received a calling from the lichking that sent him to northrend. arthas is then seen at the end cinematic of Warcraft III: Frozen Throne ascending an ice stair way where at the top is the ice veil holding nerzhul's armour. arthas slashed the veil open with Nerzhul's runeblade "Frostmourne" and don nerzhul's armour. at once he and nerzhul's souls are combined. at the end of "Arthas" (book) by Christie Golden it tells you how arthas slayed not only his former selfs soul but nerzhul's. thus creating the deathknight we know as the lich King in World of warcraft. As a recap: Nerzhul was a former Orc Shaman who was transformed into a deathknight and made king of the undead army known as the scourge. he is no more.

Taking up the cursed runeblade Frostmourne, he became a death knight, led the Scourge in destroying Lordaeron, and merged with the Lich King.Ruling as the dominant personality of the Lich King for years afterwards, Arthas was defeated in combat by adventurers of the Alliance and the Horde.
