Why did Australia attack Galipolli?

Britain asked for assistance during WW1 and one of the tasks given to Australian troops was to assist in keeping the Dardenelles open for shipping. The means by which this was achieved was to beat back the Turks at Gallipoli so that they could no longer shell the passing ships.
