But overall it seems to have been a case of loyalty to the Crown. The USA was seen in a negative light after that little revolution and the USA was being very aggressive on the West Coast, taking land seen by most in the area as belonging to Britain or British Columbia.
So even though there were many more ties, even families, to the Washington Territory to the south most of the leaders but the movers and shakers had connections and loyalty to Britain. Since Canada was still thought of as part of Britain or had at least not fought and killed British to Confederate they were seen as the nicer choice.

Canada is part of the commonwealth becaues of trade, and other economic reasons, not for it's social or athletic reasons. example- In Canada, you say hockey in reference of ice hockey. In the rest of the commonwealth, you say hockey in reference of field hockey. In Canada you play baseball, in the rest of the commonwealth you play cricket. If it was not for the United States influences, Canada would be a true menber of commonwealth. They are members for political and economic reasons.
Many great Canadians wanted Confederation. For Canada West (Ontario) George Brown and John .A. Mcdonald led them to Confederation. For Canada East (Quebec) George Cartier led them. Nova Scotia was led by Charles Tupper. New Brunswick was led by Leonard Tilley. They were the 1st 4 provinces to join confederation. PEI and Newfoundland did not want to join. Newfoundland was the last to join in 1949.

Why indeed? The majority of Nova Scotians did not want to join which was made very clear when they elected representatives wanting Nova Scotia to leave Confederation.
