He likes her because she smells good. He's just the typical, materialistic, hormone-ridden boy with added qualities that make Bella attracted to him, too, like giant hair and a super-athletic build. He, however, due to his beliefs, refuses to give into to his instincts to kill and feed on Bella, and instead ends up falling in love with her. During the first few chapters of the series, Edward merely has a biological attraction to Bella through his thirst for her. But later on through the series, he falls in love with her and eventually represses his thirst for her completely.
