The Suez crisis is also known as the Suez war and it was a war that was fought by Britain, France and Israel against Egypt. The war followed Egypt's decision of 26th July 1956 to nationalize the Suez canal. This was after the withdrawal of an offer by Britain and the US to fund the building of the Aswan dam, which was partly in response to Egypt siding with China during the tensions between China and Taiwan.
The Nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956 provoked conflict between Egypt on the one hand and Britain, France, and Israel on the other. So, the body of water is the Suez Canal.
It all happened in 1956 -In July 1956 the independently owned Suez Canal was seized and nationalised by President Nasser of Egypt. They also blocked the Canal and Strait of Tiran to Israeli shipping. Almost 3 months of tense negotiation took place with Nasser refusing to give way and causing Britain and France to plan for a takeover of the Canal Zone. The Israelis, who had been subject to many raids by Egyptian sponsored terrorists, and were concerned by Egypt's large purchases of tanks and military aircraft from Russia, were ready to join Britain and France. In late October after 3 months of inaction, Israel invaded Sinai with tanks and paratroops in an effort to open the Canal and overthrow Nasser. Britain and France followed within days, landing paratroops and Commandos all round the northern end of the Canal Zone and defeating the Egyptian forces. Within a few days the UN interrupted, demanding Britain, France and Israel to cease fighting and the Egyptians to re-open the Canal. In 1956, Britain, France and Israel invaded Egypt. Britain and France sought to regain control of the Suez Canal. Israel wanted to end guerrilla attacks from Egypt.
Egypt became an independent state in 1922. However, British influence in the country remained very strong. Above all, Britain continued to control the Suez Canal, along with France. This annoyed Egyptians, who felt that this valuable asset in their own country should belong to them. In 1956 a new Egyptian nationalist leader called Abdul Nasser decided to take control of the canal. Britain and France invaded Egypt and seized back control of the canal. However, the USA and other nations severely criticised Britain and France and pressured them into pulling out. It was a sign that Britain's days as a great imperial power were over.
