The Southern colonies were the ones with the big plantations, where they needed lots of people to work the fields. And slaves were the cheapest labor force available. New York and New Jersey didn't have as much large-scale farming, so not as much use for slaves.

The fort was an important symbol for the Americans who thought it would keep the British out of the Northern Colonies. Ther fort was captured by the British with a few casualties on either side. St Claires retreat from the fort created outrage, it was thought to be shameful and there was fury in the colonies. 6th July 1777
