Charlemagnes was a great and powerful leader, as well as a warrior. However, when he died a lot of warriors fought for his power. In the meanwhile, his empire grew weaker and weaker. When they finally selected a leader, it was too late.
I think you could blame this on Charlemagne's grandsons, who broke it up.
After his death his empire soon fell apart. his heirs battled for power for nearly 30 years. in 843 his grandsons drew up the Treaty of Verdun which split the empire in three regions.
Charlemagne did not find an empire (find, meaning discover). He founded and empire (found, meaning begin building up). The empire he founded is called the Carolingian Empire. Depending on the historian whose works you read, the Carolingian Empire was either the beginning of the Holy Roman Empire, or ancestral to the Holy Roman Empire.

charlemagne...
On the death of Pepin the kingdom was divided between Charlemagne and his brother Carloman (Carloman ruled Austrasia). Carloman died on December 5, 771, leaving Charlemagne the leader of a reunified Frankish kingdom. Charlemagne was engaged in almost constant battle throughout his reign.
it was all to do with the war
Done by the Treaty of Versailles.
Charlemagne's empire was divided into three kingdoms, in accordance with the will of Louis the Pious, Charlemagne's successor. This was formalized and clarified by the Treaty of Verdun in 843. The nominal title of emperor lasted for a while, but had little meaning. In the end, the kings stopped acknowledging attachment to the empire, and the last person claiming the throne of the Carolingian Empire, Berengar I, died in 924. Two of the three kingdoms survived. One became the kingdom of France. In another, Otto I resurrected the title of emperor and so the Holy Roman Empire came into being, which was, in turn, ancestral to Germany.
