At age seventeen Charles joined the Fred Karno Company and toured Britain performing, and then excitedly went off with them to America for their first tour in 1910. He and the troupe traveled by train and performed in several major U.S. cities. Charlie fell in love with America, its fast pace and positive, upbeat atmosphere.
