Jackson ordered the Cherokee to be driven from their homes in the SE United States, and forced to walk to Oklahoma. Known as the Trail of Tears, this forced movement killed about 1/3rd of all the Cherokee people. This was contrary to treaty, and to orders from the Supreme Court.
The Cherokee felt betrayed by Andrew Jackson because he had previously promised to protect their rights and land. However, Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, which led to the forced removal of the Cherokee from their ancestral lands in the Southeast to the West. This resulted in the Trail of Tears, a devastating journey where thousands of Cherokee died.

Many AAmericans probably felt as if they had a lot in common with Andrew Jackson because he represented the common man. Unlike the previous presidents, Andrew Jackson did not grow up in a wealthy family. He was raised in a less wealthy environment like the average person, and changed the fact that you had to be wealthy land owner to have a say in politics.
The Cherokee felt the Indian Removal Act did not apply to them since they were an organized nation and won that in the Supreme Court. Therefore the treaty of New Echota was passed by Congress to "officially" have the right to remove them.they were madThe viewed it and still view it as illegal and wrong. They viewed it as theft and attempted genocide. With Andrew Jackson ignoring the Supreme Court they had little recourse.
